Who We Are

We are a group of people who view yoga as a wellspring of personal growth beyond the usual expectations of the practice. Through our extensive experience in teaching and deep education in the field, we have devised a method that allows yoga to reach its full capacity to give individuals new tools to reach their life goals.

What We Do

Our method is called And & Both

We at Good Company New Bedford opt for an approach that allows rather than corrects. We use this method to teach people to accept in themselves a range of reactions—calm and anxiety; concern and relaxation—as they navigate work, art and play. Our aim is to nurture a developed sense of confidence and humility that leads to self-awareness and self-realization. We have redesigned yoga to achieve beneficial and often unexpected outcomes. We know this can happen through yoga and its principles; we have seen it happen many times before.

Performance art, journaling, collaging and many other art forms are used to enhance the traditional practice of yoga. Indeed, we view art as a primary force for tapping into our feelings. We eschew the usual perimeters of yoga teaching in order to explore diverse subjects such as self-sufficiency, sex and sexuality, the aging process., and employability. Our program is designed to help people from all backgrounds and of all ages. Its ethos is grounded in the belief that humans gain agency through such exploration.

A structure of resting, movement, stillness, and group cohesion is at its core. We believe that the mental, physical, and social benefits of this method give participants a safe environment from which they can gain an understanding of how they truly feel in the moment and how that can be expressed both inwardly and outwardly.

In just one example of how this method yields results, we have observed how many people can communicate better when they are lying on the floor as part of their practice. Through such techniques and the sensibility behind them we aim to increase the participant’s ability to be seen, heard, as well as to see and listen to others from a place of sincerity.

This method has as its main purpose the goal of including both our weaknesses and strengths in our outcomes. Too often, well-intentioned approaches to mindfulness and yoga only provide the illusion of well-being as they uphold a model that is out of reach for many. We choose the idea that someone can be both well and unwell at the same time; both free and unfree. We believe that empowerment comes from both.

Community Benefit:

Yoga has been shown to yield tremendous benefits to those who are active practitioners. It has been well established that yoga yields positive physical and mental health benefits for those who engage in regular practice. With respect to mental wellbeing, yoga practitioners have lower levels of anxiety and depression.

Good Company is focused on bringing yoga practice to marginalized youth. In a 2021 study conducted by the National Institute of Health (NIH) research revealed elevated levels of stress, anxiety, and depression among all adolescents. For marginalized youth who are members of BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, lower income, etc communities often experience an additional chronic stress of racism, homophobia and transphobia, etc add an additional.

Team

Juliet Loranger

Founder + Executive Director

  • (she/her) Lover of coffee, figurative art, pasta, rocknroll and existential conversations.

In the last twenty years Juliet has discovered a passion for communication with yoga and physical movement as a medium to express inwardly and outwardly what she knows and what she feels. Yoga is a focus for engaging with oneself and in the world around us. This is a root inspiration in all of Juliet’s endeavors. Her passion has been fueled from years studying and practicing with some of the most well-versed teachers of yoga and philosophy. Her dedicated training and practice began in New Orleans in 2003 with an Iyengar teacher in a small makeshift studio and has now become a sincere way of life in which she teaches to others. She actively chooses to communicate the aspects of agency and negotiation more so than using didactic methods. This is so others can find the idea of yoga to be functional, approachable, and meaningful for them.
